3 consequences of not following doctor’s orders

If you have been injured, seeking medical care is the most urgent order of business for making a full recovery. Whether you have suffered a broken bone, laceration or other physical harm, it is important to find the right provider and get the health care you need.

Too many people do this, however, and then make the mistake of disregarding the doctor’s orders. According to U.S. News, failure to comply with prescribed treatment costs $300 billion in the U.S. annually, but there are other consequences, too.

1. Prolonging time away from work

Injuries that necessitate time away from work are often both painful and inconvenient. In addition to the physical discomfort you are feeling, you are likely to be stressed about the loss of income you are potentially experiencing. If you do not follow your doctor’s prescribed regimen of treatment, though—by returning to work early, for example—you may worsen your injury and prolong the time you must spend away from your job.

2. Making an injury permanent

In severe circumstances, you might even turn a temporary injury into a permanent one. If you are nursing a fracture, putting weight on it might exacerbate the injury beyond recovery. It is vital that you listen to your medical provider’s advice and follow the treatment plan strictly if you want to recover from your injury, get back to work and move on with your life.

3. Damaging your case

If you are pursuing legal action in relation to the injury, disregarding advice the doctor gives you has the potential to damage your case. It could be leveraged against you, and it may even disqualify you for workers’ compensation benefits. If you are pursuing either of these as recourse, it is in your best interest to comply with medical orders.

An injury can seriously disrupt your life. Contacting an attorney can help you understand the legal options and recourse available.
