Woman files wrongful death suit after sister’s death

When a loved one is placed in a nursing home to live, we expect that the facility will take care of them. However, some nursing homes in Virginia as well as in other states may not take good care of their patients. One woman in a neighboring state is suing a nursing home for the wrongful death of her sister.

The woman filed the lawsuit on Oct. 7, and the nursing home and another healthcare entity are the defendants. The woman’s sister was only a resident at the center for four days from Oct. 25 to Oct. 29, 2012. During that short span, the sister suffered from several injuries, including aspiration pneumonia and urinary tract infections. The sister also fell during her residency. The woman believes that the neglectful care her sister received ultimately led to her sister’s death.

Supposedly, the defendants acknowledged that the nursing home had problems due to inadequate supplies and understaffing. The defendants are accused of committing statutory violations for its insufficient staff, which led to negligent care and the eventual death of the sister. The woman seeks undisclosed damages in the suit as well as compensation for attorney fees.

While this instance occurred in a neighboring state, a situation such as this could very well occur in Virginia. If any residents are going through a circumstance like this one, they could also pursue legal redress through a wrongful death suit. If successful, such a claim could provide monetary reimbursement for damages that accrued from any documented abuse of a nursing home patient.
